teach.

We work through questions together, identify the cause of mistakes, and use the next assignment to check understanding.

THE LESSON PROCESS

Look at the work.
Find what needs attention.

I review the work.

I ask the student to show their reasoning. A missed question may reveal a gap in algebra, a grammar rule to review, or a detail they read too quickly.

I teach the missing skill.

I explain the concept and work through an example. Then I ask the student to solve a related problem and explain each step.

I assign practice and follow up.

I send a lesson summary and specific homework. In the next session, I review the questions that still need attention.

SAT Reading & Writing: sentence boundaries.

Today: We reviewed the questions you missed in your last practice set, then worked on comma splices, semicolons, and clauses beginning with words such as “although.”
What to keep practicing: You were more consistent when you marked the subjects and verbs before choosing punctuation. Keep checking whether each clause can stand as a complete sentence.
Homework · about 60–75 minutes: Redo the six questions we marked without looking at the answers. Explain why the correct punctuation works.
Complete the assigned 20-question sentence-boundaries set. Mark any answers you guessed, even if you get them right.
Write five pairs of complete sentences. Join each pair with a semicolon, then with a comma and a coordinating conjunction such as “but.”
Next lesson: Send me your work beforehand. We’ll review the uncertain answers and check whether the same sentence-boundary patterns are getting easier.

What do we need for online lessons?

I use Google Meet, screen sharing, online whiteboards, and shared documents. Your student will need a computer, a reliable internet connection, and a quiet place to work. I’ll explain the setup before our first lesson.

How much homework do you assign?

For SAT and ACT preparation, I generally recommend about two hours of practice per tutoring hour. I choose assignments from the topics we’re working on and adjust the workload around the student’s progress and schedule. I also assign homework for math, writing, and chess.

How many SAT or ACT lessons do you recommend?

I recommend 12–18 tutoring hours for many students. Before recommending a schedule, I look at the starting score, target score, test date, and time available for homework.

Do you teach students outside the US?

Yes. I’ve taught students in 16 countries and 13 US states. All my lessons are online. Send me your time zone, or use my consultation calendar to choose a time.
